The 9th edition East African Military games were officially opened by the Vice President of Uganda, Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi at the Nelson Mandela National Stadium, Namboole in Kampala on Sunday.

The real action on the field of play kicked off with an exciting football match between Uganda and Burundi.

The two  countries played to a 2 all draw after normal time in the thrilling opener whose second half was played under floodlights.

After a closed up opening half hour of action, right back, Aggrey Kirya was denied by the woodwork when his early cross was miscalculated by the goal keeper before it bounced off the goal bar.

Sony Sugar’s left footed winger Robert Omunuk, one of the two Kenya Premier league based players playing for the Ugandan team (Musa Mudde is the other) opened the goal laden fixture with a curling freekick in the added minute of the first half to give the Ugandans a 1-0 lead.

Mustapha Francis composed himself to beat former SC Villa goal keeper, Robert Kalumba from the penalty spot after defender Musa Docca pushed Pascal Hakizimana in the forbidden area.

Daudi Hakizimana was sent for an early shower after bitterly protesting a penalty call when he tagged Alosious Lubega to the ground, a foul that earned his first booking before he picked the second moments later.

Former FUFA Big League player, Patrick Owor, with Water F.C slotted the ball past a diving Yvan Rugumaniye to restore Uganda’s lead.

With barely 10 minutes on the clock, fast paced winger, Jamal Bakunze, who had replaced Hakizimana leveled the affairs, scoring from an acute angle to spark wild cheers from the crowd.

The Ugandan team was skippered by Bandari midfielder Musa Mudde.

The other games kick off on Monday with basketball at Lugogo, Handball and netball at UCU main campus.

The cross country will take place on Wednesday, 19th August 2015 at the Jinja Gardens.

Meanwhile, the football games continue on Monday morning with the defending champions, Kenya battling on Rwanda before Tanzania faces the hosts, Simba from Uganda  later in the day.

There are five countries, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania and the hosts taking part in the event, whose host is determined on a rotational basis.
