Shock has gripped the footballing fraternity in the country when the contingent of Uganda Cranes players traveling in the official team bus has been involved in a head on road accident from Soroti.
According to an eye witness, the speeding team bus had reached Kamonkoli – Jami, along the Mbale – Kampala Highway when it got a puncture before losing control as it rammed into a speeding taxi.
It is believed four people were reported dead on the spot in the taxi.
The players and officials on board are however safe, apart from four who suffered minor injuries.
Those who suffered minor injuries and given first aid were three players, Denis Okot, Hassan Wasswa Dazo and Kezironi Kizito.
The other injured person is the FUFA communications director, Ahmed Hussein.
Another eye witness, Ivan Byekwaso who was following the bus from another vehicle narrates;
We realized the bus zooming across the road after getting a flat tyre and it knocked the taxi in front. It is so sad that four people in the taxi have lost the precious life. The players and other passengers are safe and out of danger.
FUFA has reacted swiftly to dismiss any speculation with a statement of their own on their official web portal;
Efforts have been made to secure another transport means and the Uganda Cranes contingent is on their way to Kampala. …..we thank the Lord for saving Lives of the Uganda Cranes contingent.
The contingent was from Soroti State Lodge where they had traveled to celebrate the recent CECAFA victory with the president of the Republic of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
A day earlier, the Cranes were treated to a dinner at Entebbe State House where the Vice president, Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi represented the number one citizen.
Ssekandi also read out the President’s message to the eagerly awaiting ear pinnars of the players, officials and the media present.
