Liberia Vs Uganda,
March 24th, 2014 World Cup qualifier.
Former Bunamwaya SC midfielder Boban Zirintusa who currently plies his trade with Zimbabwe’s Power Dynamos has been included in Uganda Cranes squad to face Liberia in the 2014 Brazil World Cup qualifier due to take place on March 24th.
Zirintusa was a surprise call as he has not featured for the Cranes but Cranes media officer Fred Katende has lamented that the technical team has been following him at Dynamos.
“He has been performing well for Power Dynamos and the technical team has been following him”, Katende told Kawowo Sports.
Another new member on the team is William Luwagga Kizito who plays for Leixieos FC in Portugal. Luwagga is a former member of the national U-17, U-20 and U-23teams.
Only six local based players have been included in the squad that starts training on 17th March at Namboole Stadium. These are Hamza Muwonge, Nicholas Wadada (Vipers), Hassan Wasswa (KCC FC), Said Kyeyune, Simeone Masaba (URA FC) and Denis Guma (SC Victoria University).
TP Mazembe midfielder Patrick Ochan, 2012 Cecafa Tusker Cup hero Robert Ssentongo (St. George) and Sweden based Martin Mutumba Kayongo are the notable absentees from the squad while Mike Mutyaba returns to the squad after missing out for almost the entire 2012 due to injury.
Cranes are in second place in the group on two points just two behind group leaders Senegal while Angola (2) and Liberia (1) are third and fourth respectively.
Uganda’s last game in the competition was against Senegal in June at Namboole Stadium. Both teams drew 1-1 with Godfrey Walusimbi scoring a late equaliser for Uganda after Papiss Cisse had given Senegal a first half lead.
