Yusuf Nsibambi praised and credited Uganda Sports Press Association’s (Uspa) notion of recognizing sportsmen with monthly awards.
This was at a dinner held at Lugogo Tennis Club as he picked his daughter Jamila Lunkuse’s award for the April Rwenzori-Uspa Sports Personality.
“I thank you for this,” Nsibambi, in company Lunkuse’s siblings Imran and Hannah Nsibambi said on Thursday night. He also received Shs.500,000 cash prize from executive member Aisha Nassanga on behalf of his daughter.
“While we celebrate this, we call on for government sports to the sports sector to better our displays on the international scene.” he added.
Lunkuse, who is on a sports scholarship at UK’s Plymouth College, won six gold medals and silver at the Confederation of Africa Swimming Championship (CANA) Zone 3 and 4 championships held in Lusaka, Zambia last month.
The youngest Ugandan at last year’s London Olympics posted 2:53.10 to beat South Africa’s Koen Mieke (2:58.73) and Zambia’s Paljk Tilka (2:58.79) to the gold.
In the 100m breaststroke, she won another gold medal clocking 1:17.29. Her record championship time is 1:17.03. She settled for silver in the 50m freestyle (28.09) after being beaten to gold by Botswana’s Naomi Ruele.
