Martin Musiime won his first major tournament after emerging victorious in the open category of the City Tyres sponsored National Junior Chess Championship held at City Oil, Kira Road in Kampala from Saturday 31 to Sunday 1 September 2013.
Musiime finished the event unbeaten winning with 6 points out of 6.
The Under 20 Girls category was on the other hand won by Olympian Phiona Mutesi with 5 points out of 6. Mutesi was the defending champion in the Open Category (which features Boys and Girls) but was this time round dethroned by Musiime.
Samuel Kiyaga won the Under 15 age category with 6 points out of 6 followed by Richard Buyinza with 5.5 points and Richard Kato with 5 points.
The Girls Under 15 category was won by Gloria Nansubuga with 4.5 points followed by Joan Nakimuli with 4.
In the Under 10 years age category, Isiah Wasswa was the best with 5 points followed by Malcolm Musaasizi while Lydia Nakato won the Girls category with 5 out of 6 points followed by Esther Nakyanzi with 4 and Ssinzi Nabatanzi with 3.
City Tyres provided 17 trophies for the winners with three trophies each for the boys and girls winners in the Under 10 and Under 15 age categories plus 2 each in the Under 20.
Musiime and the other winners in the various age categories will now be eligible to represent Uganda at the Africa Junior Chess Championship scheduled to be held in South Africa in October 2013.
A professional event featuring 24 top players was held concurrently with the juniors tourney and this was won by Olympian and Candidate Master Bob Bibasa who walked off with a big trophy and shillings four hundred thousand.
In second position was CM Patrick Kawuma with the same number of points and he received shillings thee hundred thousand while third placed Rajab Kamoga got two hundred thousand shillings from the sponsors.
This was the second time in a row that City Tyres was sponsoring the event that this time attracted a record entry of 316 participants, the biggest number of players to feature in a single tournament in Uganda’s Chess history.
City Tyres provided all the amenities that were required for the tournament to take place including an ambient playing Hall, trophies, prizes and pre-publicity materials among others.
Mandela Group of Companies Chairman, Omar Mandela handed over the prizes to the winners at the closing ceremony held on Sunday 1 September 2013.
