Mutebi’s KCCA Spending Spree: The 28 players he has signed in less than two seasons

On June 18, 2015, KCCA FC unveiled Mike Ray Mutebi as club manager on a three year deal to replace Abdallah Mubiru.

The manager was to be assisted by Sam Ssimbwa whose contract has since been terminated.

But in just a season and three months, Mutebi has made KCCA the highest spenders in terms of player transfer with 28 players so far signed at Phillip Omondi stadium, Lugogo.

Ismael Kiyonga brings you the full rundown of Mutebi’s extraordinary shopping basket in 15 months.

2015 SIGNINGS:

Hassan Wasswa Dazo

From: Express

Where is he now? He was a long term target for Mutebi who nearly signed him while at Villa Park in 2012.

Dazo was netted after an impressive season with the Red Eagles and broke into the first team at KCCA in his first season making a promising partnership with Timothy Awany at centre back. But he suffered an injury early this year that has kept him out of action for months.

Though still at the club, he isn’t licensed for this season as he recovers.

Denis Okot Oola

From: SC Victoria University

Where is he now? He made a decent start to his Lugogo career where he captained the side to the league but is slowly losing his grip at right back thanks to the arrival of Denis Rukundo. He is Still at the club.

Sulaimoni Akinyemi

Where is he now? The Nigerian import impressed the coaching staff at Lugogo in trials and earned a deal.

He is into his second season at the club but yet to convince the manager to earn him permanent starting berths.

Richard Ayiko

From: Maroons

Where is he now? Persistent injuries kept him out of the team for longer spells and the manager let him go at the end of last campaign.

Believed to be back at where it all started – Luzira with Maroons.

Farouq Matovu

From: Kamwokya

Where is he now? Matovu caught the eye of the KCCA manager in a friendly at Lugogo and was immediately handed a contract.

But the lad failed to convince the manager who loaned him to The Saints in the next transfer window (January 2016).

He is now at Express after the club regarded him surplus to requirements.

Martin Mpuuga

From: SC Victoria University

Where is he now? He was the manager’s first signing even before Mubiru was sacked. But since he joined, he has failed to cement a slot at centre back and lags far behind in the pecking order although he remains at Lugogo till now.

There were reports of him being loaned to Soana in the transfer window but the deal remained on paper.

Shaban Kondo

shaban kondo kccamedia

From: Stand United (Tanzania)

Where is he now? The Tanzanian was among the high profile signings given his alleged statistics that showed he had scored over 10 goals in less than 8 appearances.

He was expected to lead the line but failed on the task and in January, he went AWOL after failing to score for the club.

It is believed he is back in Tanzania though his club remains unknown.

Nelson Senkatuka

nelson senkatuka

From: Hope Doves

Where is he now? After just a season in which he scored four goals – all in the first round, he fell out of favour in the second round.

The forward despite carrying the scoring burden for the club in the first stanza of the league, was let go and is now at Proline.

Dan Nsubuga Ssekabembe

From: SC Victoria University

Where is he now? The pacey centre forward was among the new acquisitions from SC Victoria University following a great season.

But he failed to replicate that form and was loaned to Simba in the aftermath of the CECAFA Kagame Cup.

The stocky centre forward failed to impress and was released. His whereabouts are unknown.

Muzamiru Mutyaba

muzamir mutyaba vs express

From: SC Victoria University

Where is he now? Mutebi’s best signing so far. The attacking midfield gem was among the club’s best performers last season and seems to have carried on from where he left in the 2016/17 as well.

Isaac Sserunkuma

From: Express

Where is he now? He is back at where it all started — Wankulukuku. The stocky forward caught the eye of KCCA faithful after a wonderful performance for the Red Eagles but found playing time hard to come by.

Loaned to The Saints in the January window and after the expiry of the loan agreement, offloaded and back to Express.

2016 SIGNINGS:

Douglas Kisembo

From: Police

Where is he now? He is arguably one of the most promising goalkeepers in the league. The lanky short stopper is currently the second choice behind Benjamin Ochan but he is yet to earn his debut.

Charles Lukwago

From: Lweza

Where is he now? He is the third choice at the club after joining from Lweza in the previously shut window.

The goalie is a replacement for Emmanuel Opio who was released to rivals Express.

Herman Wasswa

herman wasswa and yusuf mukisa

From: Sofapaka (Kenya)

Where is he now? The centre forward returned to the team after six months away in Sofapaka.

But despite scoring 48 goals in his first stint at Lugogo, he only managed 3 in 6 months although he often started on the bench. He is now at Express.

Godfrey Ssembatya

From: SC Victoria University

Where is he now? One of Mike Mutebi’s most adored players since his days at SC Villa. He broke into the starting eleven after joining in January but an off colour show in the 2-0 loss over Vipers in the Uganda Cup marked the end of his career at Lugogo.

His current club remains unknown.

Denis Rukundo

denis rukundo kcca vs saints

From: Maroons

Where is he now? One of the best right backs in the league signed from Maroons in the recently closed window.

He is yet to dislodge skipper Denis Okot from right back but has so far made two appearances for the Kasasiro.

Emmanuel Magembe

From: Norway

Where is he now? He was one of the players Mutebi had in mind, the moment he gotten the job. He did finally get his man in the January window but despite enormous playing time offered to him, failed to live up to his billing.

He was offloaded at the end of the season and is now at Proline.

Lawrence Kasadha

From: Bandari (Kenya)

Where is he now? A player the manager rates high since his days at SC Villa. The defender cum defensive midfielder joined from Kenya’s Bandari but the start to his Lugogo career was blighted by injuries.

Had a few good performances but is now back to the sick bay and is rarely seen at Lugogo though he remains part of the team.

Jackson Nunda

jackson nunda fred agandu kcca vs saints

From: Kamwokya

Where is he now? The most technically gifted player signed by Mutebi by all standards. The manager had worked with the midfielder at SC Villa before the demise of Uganda Super League (USL).

He made a brilliant start to his career at Lugogo carrying on the creative mantle but a long term injury saw him miss matches towards the end of last season and he has never returned.

Reports are ripe that he will undergo surgery but has no license for at least the first half of this campaign.

Ceaser Samson Okhuti

ceasar okhuti kcca

From: Express

Where is he now? He is the most expensive buy during the Mutebi reign. He did sign from Express in mid-season after scoring 8 goals in 11 appearances but managed to add just 3 to that tally in six months.

Didn’t make any appearance in the 2016/17 season before he was technically kicked out via a loan deal to Onduparaka

Petit Wanok

From: SC Victoria University

Where is he now? A surprise signing at Lugogo and it was no surprise he was offered a probation contract. During his six months spell at the club, he started just one game (2nd leg semifinals of the Uganda Cup against Vipers) and also made one league appearance off the bench. Not at the club anymore and his whereabouts remain unknown.

Farouk Kawooya

From: SC Victoria University

Where is he now? Unveiled on the same day as Wanok after impressive performances for SCVU. But he was never given the chance to prove himself as he was often out of the squad and made not more than four competitive appearances until he was shipped to Onduparaka where is on a long term loan deal.

Isaac Muleme

isaac muleme kcca vs jmc hippos

From: SC Villa

Where is he now? Like most of the signings, he is a re-union with Mutebi after the two worked together at SC Villa four years ago.

The left fullback was signed in anticipation of Joseph Ochaya joining Bidvest Wits in South Africa and has made just two substitute appearance at Lugogo.

He got injured against Lweza but has fully returned to training and hopeful for selection in forthcoming matches.

Isaac Kirabira

isaac kirabira kcca vs express

From: The Saints

Where is he now? A surprise signing just as Muleme given the duo betrayed Mutebi at Villa Park during the fracas that led to two leagues in 2012.

The manager highly rates the ex-SC Villa captain and has started him in his three previous games sending Hakim Senkumba to the stands.

Geoffrey Sserunkuma

super cup geoffrey sserunkuma

From: Lweza

Where is he now? The veteran centre forward returned to Lugogo in a surprise move given Mutebi’s stance on player recycling.

But he has already repaid the manager’s faith with four goals in eight appearances so far.

Brian Ochwo

From: Simba

Where is he now? The left back was meant to be a backup to Muleme with Ochaya’s anticipated departure.

He is yet to make an appearance for the Kasasiro but patiently waits for his time as he lags third in pecking order.

Paul Musamali

From: unknown

Where is he now? Four years ago, Mutebi described him as ‘Uganda’s next big thing’ on his unveiling at Villa Park.

But the “forward” has never lived up to this billing although the manager still believes he can get the best out of him.

He has made just two substitute appearances off the bench this season but it will take him a lot of effort to convince the Lugogo faithful.

Ronald Musana

From: Tusker

Where is he now? When Mutebi signed at Villa in late 2011, Musana was loaned to Water but recalled later.

Mutebi highly rates him and it was no doubt he re-united with him in the window although he is yet to break into the first team but has already played once – off the bench in the 3-1 win over BUL.

Vincent Kayizzi

From: Vipers

Where is he now? Like the manager, Kayizzi is in his third stint at Lugogo after joining from Vipers SC (Vipers had loaned him to Express FC) at the end of last season.

The experienced winger has been trusted in most of the games this season although he is yet to repay the manager’s faith with wonderful performances.

He has so far been the most substituted player at Lugogo this season.

Brian Majwega

From: Simba

Where is he now? The left winger rejoined KCCA from Tanzania’s Simba and penned a two year contract.

He has been Mutebi’s trusted left sided attacker in a three-man attacking forward line but like Kayizzi, he has a lot to improve but he has shown that game by game although he is yet to be the Majwega the KCCA faithful want to see.

Robert Ssentongo

From: URA

Where is he now? The manager’s last signing as per now. Like many of the new acquisitions, Ssentongo returns to Lugogo for another stint and has made an instant impact with 3 goals in 3 games.

He has been offered a one year deal at the club just like most senior players but Mutebi says the door isn’t closed for him to sign an extension if he conducts himself well on and off the pitch.

Promoted from the academy

Ronald Kikonyongo, Lawrence Bukenya, Allan Okello Paul Wila, Julius Poloto and Mustafa Kizza

Kikonyongo and Poloto graduated last season and made a couple of appearances for the side. The former has been loaned to Maroons alongside new graduates – Mustafa Kizza and Paul Wila while Poloto and Allan Okello have been asked to train whenever they have time given their tight school schedules.

Bukenya is the only graduate licensed for the 2016/17 season and made the substitutes bench in the 2-1 loss to Vipers.
