2017 World Winter Games (14th March) – Austria
The Uganda Special Olympics team has intensified their preparations ahead of the 2017 world winter games in Austria.
As mandatory checks ahead of World games, Special Olympics Uganda conducted a one day dental screening activity on Monday.
The screening is part of health program sponsored by Golisano Foundation, at Daughters of Charity-Kiwanga Kampala City.
Over 100 children and adults with intellectual disability benefited in the screening.
Mulago School of Paramedics conducted the screening as local partner. The Special Olympics Uganda Healthy Athletes program offers health services and information to athletes and communities in need.
“The screening exercise was meant to create awareness to communities that we serve,” Special Olympics Team leader Genevieve Bamwidhukire said.
Special Olympics Uganda currently offers multiple health screening programs throughout the country i.e. FUNFitness (physical therapy) Healthy Hearing (audiology), Med Fest (sports physical exam), Opening Eyes (vision), Healthy Promotion and Special Smiles (dentistry).
The exercises educate athletes and communities on healthy lifestyle choices and identify problems that may need additional follow-up.
This also helps to further improve access and health care for Special Olympics athletes at event-based health exams.
