Ugandan professional female golfer, Flavia Namakula has continued with a remarkable acclimatization to the paid ranks since turning pro in January 2017.

During her 8th tournament (Johannesburg Ladies Open) since the start of the year, she was steadily chasing the leading pack by the close of business of the opening round at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club on Sunday.

Monique Smit led day one with a superb five-under-par 67.

Narrating her game to Sunshine Ladies Tour, Smit who lost 20kgs in 10 months noted;

The first round was just about committing to every shot. I wanted to finish among the leaders, but I didn’t set my expectations to high. I struck the ball well and I putted really well, despite the really wet conditions out there. For once, it all came together.

She played for a bogey at the second with a brace of birdies and capitalized on a good start to add further gains at 14, two and six before she finished in impressive fashion with a birdie at the par fourth ninth.

Lejan Lewthwaite and Lauren both tee off day two with a four – under par 68.

Namakula is tied at nine – over par 77 with Ethel Ruthenberg AMA, Swedish lady Sofia Ljungqvist, Michelle Leigh and France’s Sophie Giquel-Bettan.

The golfers are fighting for R500,000 prize money.
