Ugandan marathoner Geoffrey Kusuro clocked 1:01:15 in Rome-Ostia Half Marathon as he managed 5th behind winner Ethiopia’s Guye Adola in the men’s race on Sunday.
Adola, Justus Kangogo, Philip Kangogo, Peter Kwemoi and Langat Kipkiru set off at a fast pace early on.
Kusuro and 2014 winner Aziz Lahbabi from Morocco were left quite a distance and failed to recover to join the leading pack.
The group was reduced to three men – Adola, Justus Kangogo and Kwemoi – and they passed through 10km in 27:42, 18 seconds.
And as the pace fell, Adola become the first Ethiopian man to win the Rome-Ostia Half Marathon since 2011 when he crossed the finish-line in 59:18.
Kenya’s Gladys Cherono won the women’s race.
It was the seventh time in the history of the popular Italian race, the winner finishing within one hour.
