After starting the Zone V tournament with a comprehensive 94-72 win over Somalia, Uganda are one win away from topping group B and qualifying for the semifinals.

In their bid to return to AfroBasket, Uganda brushed aside Somalia and will take on Burundi in their final group game on Wednesday.

The Silverbacks had a strong start to the tournament and scored 39 points in the first quarter to go into the break with a 20-point lead.

Led by Stanley Ocitti and debutant Darius Pegues, the Silverbacks put Somalia to the sword and the two will be important against the tricky Burundians.

Mandy Juruni’s charges are favourites to top the group and the display against Somalia drew more light to the team’s possibility of easing through the group stages.

Ocitti, playing at his second tournament for the country, led the team in the first game with a game high 33 points and 10 rebounds while Pegues marked his debut with 20 points and 4 rebounds.

Team captain Stephen Omony and and his assistant Joseph Ikong contributed 17 and 11 points respectively.

The win over Somalia put Uganda on top of Group B and the duel with Burundi on Wednesday will be enough for Uganda to confirm their place in the semis.

The two teams that top the group will qualify for the semifinals and cross with the top two from Group A that has hosts Egypt, South Sudan, Kenya and Rwanda.

The semifinals will be played on Friday before the tournament climax on Saturday.

In 2014, Uganda defeated Kenya, Rwanda and Somalia to finish behind Egypt and qualify for the 2015 AfroBasket tournament.
