2016 Kenya National Rally Champion Tapio Laukkanen will be looking for a maiden Safari victory when the rally revs this weekend on 17-18th March.
The former Finnish and British Rally Champion has for the last two years commanded the pace in Kenya; from winning several events to claiming the KNRC title last year.
He is however still yet to taste the glory of the prestigious event in the region.
In 2015, he fell victim of the Safari toughness with a DNF. He managed to finish third overall last year.
“Safari has been a bit hard for us the last two times, even though we managed a third finish last year.
“This year, we shall not use any different strategy than any other events since it’s only two days and not that long mileage wise. So we hope for the best,” he told Kawowo Sports.
Besides the Safari win, Laukkanen will also be out to hit his first finish this season.
“I just want to win the event as we need maximum points for KNRC. The event is so short so no need to tease the car that much,” he said.
Laukkanen is mindful of the challenge from different crews this weekend.
“My teammate Manvir has greatly improved his pace plus the top five KNRC drivers will also be up for the fight during Safari rally.”
The Finnish will have Gavin Laurence calling the pace notes in a Subaru Impreza GVB.
