Since the year 2000, local badminton has lived to enjoy the sweat of teenage players through various events – Taibah International Schools tournament inclusive.
For the record, players as Sauda Nabaweesi, Daniel Mihogo, Brenda Mugabi are living testament having played the tournament since primary right to the university level.
17 years down the road, the tournament returns with the 2017 edition that will take place at the Lugogo Indoor Satdium in Kampala.
Addressing journalists during the official launch of the three-day tournament at Taibah Junior Kawempe campus, Uganda Badminton Association (UBA) technical director, Simon Mugabi informed the journalists that Taibah International and badminton remain one solid block.
Local badminton right from the grass roots has grown through leaps and bounds – thanks to tournaments like Taibah schools championship.
Like it has been organized, there will be competition in the different age categories as U-10, U-13, U-15 and U-10 under the individual and team events.
Head teacher at Taibah International Junior School – Kawempe branch Hajjat Madina Mugenyi, flanked by the admissions manager Muhammmad Salim Kagga and Uganda Badminton Association official Gilbert Ofoyuru, handed over the tournament equipment (shutters, shutter corks) as well as the prizes (T-Shirts and Trophies) that will be rewarded to the different winners.
Mugenyi recommitted the school’s cause to further support the growth of badminton and sports generally in the country.
At Taibah Schools, we remain indebted towards the development of badminton and sports in this country.
This is the sole reason why for more than 15 years, we have sponsored the Taibah Schools badminton tournament.
Sports changes the mindset of children which is why at Taibah School we front co-curriculum activities.
This year, Taibah Schools contributed Shs6M towards the running of the tournament logistics.
More than 35 schools are expected to register for this year’s event with at least 200 players confirmed in the different age categories.
Qualifiers and preliminary round action sets off on Friday, 17th March and the following day.
The finals shall take place on Sunday with the official prize giving ceremony following shortly after.
