The Zambian rallying couple, Leroy and Urshlla Gomes are looking back at the 2017 Safari Rally as the most exciting event in their rally career so far.
The husband and wife combination confessed to have gone through a whole new experience as they took on the second round of Africa Rally Championship last weekend.
“It has been an amazing experience for us, I know it wasn’t the full Safari, but it was worthy and not one to be forgotten.
“First, the routes were totally a different terrain from what we have been used to back home. They had all that a driver needed; from rough, smooth, long stretches and a bit complex as well,” Leroy Gomes told Kawowo Sports.
The Elementaita stage was another highlight for the Gomes.
“Elementaita was the longest stage we have ever done; fifty kilometres. The stage put us to test, it was not just about the pace, but patience, endurance, strategical knowing were to go fast and slow in order to bring the car back in shape,” Leroy added.
The Gomes finished 15th overall, losing out on the ARC points that required them to finish among the top ten.
They however admit their ARC contention is beyond scoring points.
“We are going to do the whole ARC season but we are in it mainly for the experience. We are already achieving our target.”
“We have so far got basic experience from Safari, we now know the capability of our new car and besides, racing with some of the fastest drivers in Africa it’s just enough for us to be proud of. We shall definitely come back,” he said.
The Gomes now switch focus to the next ARC event scheduled for April 28-30 in South Africa.
