- There are now four Ugandan ready to ply their trade in the ZSL
- Three Kenyans play at Zesco United while one is at Buildcon
Kenyan international centre back David ‘Calabar’ Owino says he is glad to see Ugandans embrace the Zambia Super League.
The Zesco FC defender hailed the level of the topflight league in Zambia saying it is way above the KPL as well as the Uganda Premier League and thinks it will develop the players more.
“The ZSL is more competitive than both KPL and UPL,” he told Kawowo Sports. “Maybe the KPL has more publicity and the like but the Zambia league is competitively far and also better in terms of player payments,” he added.
Alongside Owino, two other Kenyan internationals, Jesse Were and Anthony ‘Teddy’ Akumu also ply their trade with Zesco United and have been joined in the ZSL by left winger Clifton Miheso in Buildcon.
Ugandans in Zambia
For the forthcoming ZSL season, four Ugandan footballers, Joseph Ochaya, Herman Wasswa (Lusaka Dynamos), Isaac Isinde (Buildcon) and Jimmy Bageya (Napsa Stars) will make appearances.
“They are very welcome to Zambia,” said Owino who scored in Zesco United’s 2-2 draw against Burundi’s Oze Creatures in the CAF Confederation Cup. “It’s a good league and I am hopeful they will have a good time.”
Already, Zanaco, Zambia’s reigning league champions are into the group stages of the CAF Champions League.
