Kalungi’s Independence record late brace to rally past Eagles

Henry Kalungi’s Charlotte Independence continued to shine after their win against New York Red Bulls II in the United Soccer League – beating Premier Development League’s Charlotte Eagles on Wednesday in the Second Round of the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Independence recorded a late brace to earn a 3-2 victory, second-half sub Enzo Martinez supplementing their first for the derby win.

Kalungi and colleagues were down 2-1 with less than 20 minutes remaining, Martinez quickly showed his worth, finding a 77th-minute equalizer, through a right-footed penalty kick into the back of the net.

Independence’s Martinez brothers teamed up for the winner – Alex Martinez exchanging with Enzo for the go-ahead strike, taken from the right of the box.

Kalungi featured for the whole game, helping his side record three points in the intense encounter.

Independence will now prepare for the Third Round of the Open Cup when they travel to face North Carolina FC on Wednesday, May 31, at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
