• Final: Fred Wanzala beat Denis Anguyo – 3&1
• Third Place: Phillip Kasozi beat Vincent Byamukama – 3&2

When the 146th Golf Open tees off in July at the Royal Birkdale in Southport, England, there will be three lucky golfers from East Africa.

Two Kenyans Isaac Mariera and John Muchiiri will be joined by the diligent cum talented Ugandan professional golfer Fred Wanzala.

The trio will not travel as active players for the prestigious championship but rather, as special clients who will comfortably gel with the finest guests in the VIP box after winning the treasured Singleton Golf Challenge that teed off on January 27^th at Entebbe Golf Club,

The hardworking pair of Isaac Mariera and John Muchiiri won over Dan Kajungu and Collin Nuwagira – 2&1 in the finals of the Amateurs’ category.

Addressing the guests and fellow golfers at the Entebbe Cricket Oval (Kakeeka), where the 19^th hole black tie party was organized, the winners hailed the sponsors for the incredible gesture.

Muchiri noted;

It’s been a very long journey but I would like to thank the sponsors and Management of Entebbe club for the great innovation.

Singleton Championship has brought a lot of life at the Club.

I thank all the opponents with whom we have played with right from the time the tournament began, to all those who participated we are all winners regardless of the result.

Mariera added;

First and foremost I would like to thank my partner John Muchiiri with whom I’ve played with in the tournament.

He persuaded me to resume playing golf after I had given up on the game.

A big thank you to the sponsors for putting together a wonderful tournament.

We enjoyed the last six months and won every game.

We are all winners and our task will be to represent all of you at the British Open.

I have been thinking of retiring from golf but I will be back next year.

As consolation, Dan Kajungu and Collin Nuwagira each earned a night at the lavish Serena Golf Resort with a round of Golf.

Fred Wanzala on the other hand, overcame rival Dennis Anguyo 3&1 in the professional event.

Wanzala, on top of the trip, also partook the biggest share of the UgShs12M prize money staked by the sponsors.

Now working as the Serena Golf Course club pro, Wanzala who is originally from Jinja Golf Club spoke with confidence, attributing the victory to continued practice;

I didn’t take the tournament for granted so I camped at the Entebbe Golf Course throughout the week.

I had an intense practicing session on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday playing 18 holes.

On Wednesday, I played 36 holes. I thank all the sponsors and my fellow Pros for a job well done. I returned on Friday for the range and putting.

Mark Ociiti, the beer company M.D congratulated all the winners and hailed Entebbe Club for a job well done in hosting the Singleton championship.

It has been six months of absolute fun and memories.

Through our Singleton whiskey brand, we aim at crafting first impressions that will make lasting impressions.

Crowd darlings Kiryowa Kiwanuka and Elly ‘Sober’ Mukasa took third place.

This was after they overcame the Jadu Patel and Anthony Agaba pair 6&5.

Kiwanuka and Mukasa will each spend two nights at the Kabalega Wilderness Lodges.

Patel and Agaba who finished in fourth place walked away with a range of prizes courtesy of Pinnacle security.

There were a couple of other prizes given out as regards the most consistent, smartest players for each gender and overall awards as well.

Guests dined and wined till the wee hours of the next day in celebratory mood of the Singleton golf series, spanning for a lengthy period of six months.
