Second half goals from midfielder Siddy Alum and Ramula Nakajjumba ensured Weatherhead Gazelles opened their 2017 campaign in the National Hockey League with a 3-0 victory over league debutants Rhino on Sunday at the National Hockey Stadium, Lugogo.
Following a barren first half, Alum, last season’s league top scorer with 31 goals opened the scoring five minutes into the second stanza, before Nakajjumba doubling the lead seven minutes later.
Alum then found her second of the day, Weatherhead’s third in the 53rd minute to ensure victory for her side on the opening day while subjecting Rhino to defeat on their maiden appearance in the league.
Well aware of Wananchi’s commanding victory, Gazelles desperately needed maximum points to keep the defending champions in check, and while they did not trounce their opponents like Wananchi did to KHC, it was a start they needed.
The result takes Weatherhead to the second position, level on points with leaders Wananchi, but with an inferior goal difference.
Rhino, meanwhile are third in the table standings.
