After three years of trying, Entebbe Golf Club member Davis ‘Dubuisson’ Kato has qualified to the Uganda National Team for the very first time.

The handicap 1 towering golfer is among the 10 players out of the 21 who took part and made the cut from the three-day grueling national team qualifiers held at the par 71 Entebbe Golf Club.

An excited Kato, who amassed 9 points after 72 holes revealed that the qualification did not come by surprise but rather through hard work and continuous practice.

I am very happy to have qualified for the national team after three years of trying in the qualifiers. It has been through hard work and continuous hours of training on the course.

Kato’s lucky charm this time round, like he confesses, could be the seasoned golf kit that had Bridgestone J33 – irons, XX10 Srixon (driver), Mizuno 50 & 58 degrees (wedges) and Mizuno (putter).

He attributes knowledge of the course as another factor in his qualification.

I grew up on this course. I practice and play from here.

Home advantage played in my favour. Save for the rains on the opening day, the course was playable.

Kato won over Henry Ssali, Emmanuel Moko, Hassan Kiyemba, Martin Ochaya, Becca Mwanja, Grace Kasango, Herman Mutebi, Solomon Enyoru before squaring off with Emmanuel Ogwang and Jinja’s Muhammod Ismail.

He fell to the on-fire Adolf Muhumuza and Richard Baguma.

The Nkumba University Business Administration graduate salutes the rest of the playing mates in a special way.

He also sings praise of all his sponsors who have supported him through every thick and thin in his golfing journey.

I want to thank the players I have played with since the start of the national team qualifiers. They are all great players.

I cannot forget my sponsors who have supported me along the way.

Michael Tumusiime, Steven Ojambo, Tonny Katamba, Edwin Tabaro and Michael Monne have been supportive towards my golfing cause in a way or another.
