National Hockey League: Kampala Swans secure first win

Kampala Hockey Club Swans won the battle of the struggling sides in the National Hockey League, beating debutants Rhinos 3-0 to register their first victory of the campaign.

With both sides suffering the same number of defeats [three], the tie took added significance as a must win.

The first half ended goalless with both sides shy of goal, but just when Rhinos thought they had managed to match a side they broke away from, Sandra Namusoke fired in the opening goal in the 57th minute.

And immediately, the game took a different twist. The Swans added two more goals, through Melisa Nabulime who notched a brace.

Nabulime scored the second goal a minute after Namusoke’s opener before wrapping the evening with her second- KHC’s third in the 69th minute.

Coming into the game, both sides were struggling. The Swans had been involved in humiliating defeats, losing 11-0 to defending champions Wananchi, before suffering a 4-1 and a 4-0 loss to Weatherhead and Deliverance Church Uganda respectively.

On the other hand, Rhinos who lost 5-0 to Wananchi last weekend suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Weatherhead in their maiden appearance in the league and were also on the wrong side of a seven goal thriller against Deliverance.

The three points lift KHC above Rhinos which means the latter drops to the bottom.
