- URA 0-2 Azam
Tanzania top flight side Azam Football Club has recorded their first victory on the Ugandan tour after overcoming URA F.C 2-0 at Lugogo on Friday.
Ghanaian striker Yahaya Mohammed scored the two goals in a match officiated by FIFA Referee Ali Sabilla Chelengat.
First, the burly dread locked center forward beat goalie Mathias Muwanga with a surprising long range left footed effort in the 19th minute.
Before the goal, the tax collectors had threatened the visitors when Dennis Kamanzi – one of the several new signings for the club – hit the ball narrowly wide with his weaker left foot inside the area.
Against the run of play, defenders Julius Mutyaba and Patrick Mbowa hesitated to clear the line before Mohammed scored with a dipping shot past the stranded goalkeeper.
Striker Rajab Aburahman, another new recruit (from JMC Hippos) missed finding the equalizer when he hit over the bar after defender David Mwatika (day’s team captain for Azam) failed to play safe on the half hour mark.
Half time ended 1-0 as the two team players returned to the locker rooms for the mandatory half time rest.
As the second half returned, it took Mohammed just 4 minutes to double the lead.
The forward hit a first time shot from an acute angle on the left for the second and final goal on the day.
URA was the better side for much of the second half although suspect finishing remained their only undoing.
Both sides called for a couple of changes as the second half continued.
URA’s technical bench introduced all the 10 substitutes to the game. Goalkeeper Cleo Ssetuba, king pin defender Richard Kasaga, Fred Okot, Siraje Sentamu, Peter Lwasa, Ronald Kigongo, Charles Sempa, Simon Okwi, Robert Mukongottya and youngster Steven Mpoza all got a run in to the game.
Only Patrick Mbowa played for the entire duration of the match also watched by the Azam Group CEO, Jamal Bahkresa.
Romanian Cioaba Aristica, the head coach for Azam called 4 changes to his side that maintained the lead to perfection.
In came Yahya Zayd for the two goal hero Mohammed Yahaya, Masoud Abdallah replaced Enock Atta, Braison Raphael came in for Joseph Mahundi and Frank Domayo took over Salmin Hoza’s place.
Meanwhile, the unused substitutes were Benedict Haule, Daniel Amoah, Aggrey Morris, Bruce Kangwa, Salum Abubaker, Waziri Junior, Mohammed Yakubu and Ramadhani Singano.
URA Football Club officials Ali Ssekatawa (First Vice President), Moses Kibumba (Second Vice President) and the director of finance, Ceaser Lebeja watched the match.
The Tanzanians take a day’s break before resuming the tour with two more matches against Onduparaka and Vipers on Sunday and Monday respectively.
In the earlier two matches played, Azam drew 2-2 with the Uganda Cranes (CHAN team) and 1-1 with KCCA.
The tour, according to the head coach Aristica is intended to help him assess the players ahead of the start of the 2017-18 Tanzania premier league season.
