National Hockey League: Wananchi out to assume the summit

Wananchi [M] can go top of the National Hockey League table with victory over Simba on Saturday.

The record league champions are currently placed third in the table standings with 16 points, three adrift of the summit, but victory tomorrow will hand them the top spot on goal difference.

The side ended the second round with a hard fought victory against league leaders Kampala Hockey Club Stallions [ending the Stallions unbeaten run in the league] a couple of weeks ago, and now head into the opening game of the third round looking to dislodge Bernard Bwire’s team from the top.

Against Simba, a side Wananchi clobbered 5-1 and 11-0 in the first and second round respectively, it should be a routine win for Joshua Opolot and his charges.

If as expected they ease past Ali Mohammad’s team, Wananchi will stay top of the table for at least seven days given the top two teams in the league KHC and Weatherhead are out of action this weekend.

Having notched 37 goals thus far, the defending champions remain the high scoring team in the league and are expected to put quite a number past Simba who are the second worst defending team in the league after bottom side Rockets.

Last season’s top scorer Thomas Opio will be looked at for goals against the side he likes scoring against. He already has six goals against Ali’s side this season having netted a brace in the first round and four in the second round.

Simba have failed to pick up a point against the top three sides. The side has had to suffer at the hands of the top sides, losing all six against them. Their two wins came against Rockets.

They sit second last with six points.
