Uganda Premier League (UPL) – Match day 1 continuation:
- Express 0-0 Kirinya-Jinja S.S
- URA 2-1 UPDF
Just like the most games on match day one of the 2017/18 Uganda Premier league, the encounter between Express and Kirinya-Jinja played over a cloudy Mutesa II Wankulukuku skyline produced no goals.
Despite the fact that there were serious threats at goal from either sides, the defence lines and goalkeepers remained as solid and compact as the famous Nyero rocks.
Former Fire Masters, UTODA, KCCA, FC Khartoum and lately Police forward Michael Birungi missed to convert arguably the best chance of the day as early as the 6th minute.
A teasing through ball from play maker Steven Bengo found Birungi totally unmarked on the far right but the fast paced winger blasted the ball over and high of Tom Ikara’s goal posts.
Sserunkuma, returning to Uganda after a successful pro stint in Kenya was full of life for the Express front line with amazing runs on and off the ball.
Express goalkeeper Godwin Buule was at full alert to thwart and deny the visitors at close and far ranges via Musa Esenu and Isaac Ntege’s attempts at goal.
Referee Ali Kaddu waved off a couple of penalty cries after a ball to hand incident by from defender Omar Hitimana and a powerful push on striker Esenu, an on-loan player from Vipers Sports Club.
Ten minutes into the second half, the Express technical bench of interim coaches Samuel Kawalya, Hassan Mubiru and Edward Kalungi agreed to withdraw Bengo for Andrew Ssekayombya.
Five minutes later, Baker Kasule replaced the weary legs of Michael Birungi.
Kirinya-Jinja S.S’ only change in the match happened with a quarter of hour left. Anthony Mayanja replaced new signing Faizal Muwawu.
Kirinya-Jinja S.S midfielders Godfrey Akol and Isaac Ntege were booked for unsporting display in the game.
Express’ second half substitute Baker Kasule was the home side’s player cautioned.
From last season’s Express team, only Juma Ssebaduka and the day’s captain Steven Luswata featured.
In the other match of the day, Uganda Revenue Authority outwitted UPDF 2-1 at the Mandela National Stadium.
Fred Okot and striker Bogota Labama Kamana were on target for the tax collectors whilst Walter Lubangkene scored UPDF’s consolation.
The league takes a one day break before returning with two matches on Friday. Vipers host BUL at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende and Soana entertains Bright Stars at Kavumba.
