Ghana rallies to hold Egypt in World Cup Qualifier dead rubber

FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifiers (Group E):

  • Ghana Black Stars 1-1 Egypt Pharaohs
  • Congo 1-1 Uganda

The Black Stars finished third in group E of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign.

The West Africa’s position was confirmed on Sunday after their one all draw with Egypt played at the Cape Coast Stadium.

The Pharaohs took the lead through Mahmoud Shikabala moments after the second half kicked off.

Shikabala benefited from a squared ball by Trezeguet from the right before unleashing a stunning strike past the Ghana keeper Ofori.

The Black Stars equalized three minutes later through Norway-based Edwin Gyasi.

Gyasi scored from outside the box with a heavy deflection that wrong-footed goalkeeper Sherif Ekramy.

With Egypt already through to next World Cup in Russia, this match mattered less save for determining the final group standings for Uganda and Ghana.

Uganda rallied from a goal down to draw at Congo in Brazzaville. Milton Karisa’s 11th minute goal canceled out Marvin Baudry’s cool finish in the 10th minute. This means Congo stayed rock bottom with 2 points.

Ghana and Uganda finished third and second respectively. The Uganda Cranes ended the campaign with 9 points to Black Stars’ 7.
