Uganda Hockey Association [UHA] finally took a decision to dock Kampala Hockey Club Stallions points after three months of wait.
Weatherhead petitioned the competitions committee with claims that KHC used an ineligible player on September 16 in their 1-0 loss to the side in the third round. The player in question was Samuel ‘Webo’ Wakhisi who was still contracted to a Kenyan club Chase.
According to the National Hockey League rules, no player participating in any other national league for any team under the auspices of the Africa Hockey Federation is eligible to participate in the National Hockey League.
The Association acted upon this rule to dock KHC three points and five goals; however, it came after a long wait which has left many wondering why.
“I think it [decision] came at a wrong time,” Weatherhead player-coach Vincent Kasasa said. “With or without the points, we had already laid strategies for winning the trophy. Awarding the points at the end of the league when we appealed right after the game shows weakness in our governing body UHA.”
After the weekend games that went Weatherhead’s way following their 5-2 thumping of Simba and Wananchi’s 6-2 thrashing of KHC, Kasasa and his side had to beat bottom side Rockets to clinch their first league title since 2011. That won’t be necessary now, but Kasasa insists they have to beat Rockets to win the league ‘honorably’.
