Ivan Thawithemwira bats in the nets on national team duty

After over 3 successful seasons with Challengers, Ivan Thawithemwira has chosen to leave the lub on a high with his destination being the Fort Portal based Nyakasura School.

Nyakasura School features in the Division 3 of the national league which means Thawithemwira gives up the luxuries of the competing in Division 1 of the cricket league.

In a surprise move he will take up the player/coach role at the School so that he can be able help the players develop on the field but also help them to nurture them while off the field.

Nyakasura previous minnows in cricket have been making serious moves since Thawithemwira got involved 3 years ago. They have made the semifinals of the Schools Cricket Week for the past 2 years and joined Division 3 of the cricket league last year.

When he spoke with the former Challengers captain, he mentioned that being overlooked for national duty was one of the reasons he chose to move to Nyakasura.

Well, it’s a privilege to play with Nyakasura and pass on any knowledge. I realized I wasn’t getting called up to the National side and thought there was no point just playing in first division when my heart is with the kids. I might as well go and carry on with the work while with the boys themselves.

The cricket mad region of western Uganda dominates junior cricket in Uganda and this move can only enhance the growth of the game but most importantly the development of players.

Challengers had a mixed season last year finishing in a lowly 5th place in the league but Thawithemwira led to the  T20 title which they won unbeaten.

Denis has represented Uganda in international cricket events including the World Cup. He is currently the captain of Wanderers Cricket Club.
