Wayland Baptist University Pioneers will face Central Methodist University Eagles in the first round of the NAIA Men’s Basketball National Championships.
The game will be played on Wednesday, March 14 at the Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri.
The Pioneers (23-9) are seeded seventh in their quadrant of the 32-team bracket, while their first round opponent Central Methodist (27-5) is seeded second. The Eagles are ranked seventh in the NAIA Top 25, where Wayland is the equivalent of 26th.
If the Pioneers win, they will face either third-seeded, 10th-ranked William Carey University (Mississippi) or sixth-seeded Life University (Georgia)on Friday, March 16.
Wayland and Central Methodist have not played any common opponents this season and the teams have met only once previously (in 1993) with Wayland winning, 110-92.
While the Pioneers are making their fourth appearance at nationals in the last five years and 18th overall, Central Methodist is in Kansas City for the first time since 2010 and their seventh overall.
Ugandan center/forward Samuel Kalwanyi who has been an integral part of the Pioneers for most part of the season is expected to play a big role on the National stage.
