Juma Miiro has settled for a bronze medal in Boxing at the ongoing 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.
The younger flyweight (49 kgs) boxer has lost his semifinal fight this morning to Amit Panghal of India at Oxenford Studios.
Miiro was guaranteed a medal having defeated Kenya’s Shaffi Hassan in the quarterfinals but he could not go for the gold fight as he was outsmarted by the Indian.
Amit won by unanimous decision with all the five judges scoring in his favour.
Miiro is the fourth Ugandan to win a medal at the 2018 games. Joshua Cheptegei (Gold), Stella Chesang (Gold) and Mercyline Chelangat (bronze) are the other medal winners.
How did other Ugandan boxers fare?
Uganda took five boxers in Gold Coast and only Miiro got into the medal bracket. Two bowed out at the quarterfinal stage, one at the Round of 16 and as many at the Round of 32.
Shadir Musa defeated Merven Clair (Mauritius) at the Round of 16 but lost to Pat McCormack (England) at the quarterfinals in the Welterweight (69 kgs) category.
Reagan Ssimbwa defeated Lukmon Lawal (Nigeria) at the Round of 16 but lost to Sammy Lee (Wales) at the quarterfinals in the Light Heavyweight (81 kgs) category.
Bashir Nasir lost to Zweli Dlamini (Swaziland) at the Round of 16 in the Bantamweight (56 kgs).
Ronald Ssemujju lost to Luke McCormack (England) at the Round of 32 in the light Welterweight (64 kgs).
