Our Savior new head coach David Burkowski was handed a rude welcome to the National Basketball League as his side fell to Sharing Youth 72-66 on the opening day of the 2018 season.

Despite being in control through out the first three quarters, Our Savior ran out of steam during the fourth quarter and ultimately the extra period of the end-to-end game played in front of a capacity crowd inside Lugogo Indoor Stadium.

Our Savior edged the first quarter 19-16, with guards Diego Angemi and Joseph Wacha as well as forward Wilberforce Pirwoth doing most of the production offensively. For Sharing, it was Charles Semugabo who got rolling in the opening 10 minutes.

After a balanced second quarter, Our Savior started to slowly pull away from their opponents and led by as many as 11 points as the third frame expired.

However, their offense started to fade early in the fourth quarter while Sharing were only coming to life with Barak Mopele leading the charge off the bench.

Turning Point

Trailing by 3 points (59-56) on Diego Angemi’s lay-up, Sharing were forced into a timeout and on return, Mopele pulled up to bring the Nsambya based side with in a point (59-58).

Two successive turnovers by Burkowski’s men gifted Sharing with an opportunity to win the game in regulation but Francis Nitus missed the first of his two throws, but forced the game to overtime with the second.

The Makerere based side never got going in the extra period despite leading 64-61 with just under four minutes to play.

Nitus, Mopele and Semugabo weaved through Our Savior’s nearly absent defense for easy stuff at the basket, and ultimately the win on day one.

Mulamba Nkumbi shone offensively with game high 23 points in a losing effort. Angemi and Pirwoth scored 13 and 10 points respectively.

Meanwhile, Mopele led Sharing’s team effort with 19 points, Semugabo contributed 16 points and pulled down 14 rebounds while Malek Lino also contributed 16 points.
