National T20 League: Ceylon Lions, KICC, Challengers and Damani through to Quarterfinals

Ceylon Lions celebrate

Ceylon Lions have laid down the gaunt for the National T20 League after breezing through the group games without losing a game.

They sealed top spot in Group A with a resounding win over Division I League champions Damani at the lakeside oval in Entebbe on Saturday.

Ceylon Lions has the easiest route to the semis as they face the students of Jinja SSS. Despite making the quarterfinals, the students have little experience at this level and unless they spring up a surprise, Ceylon Lions should easily make the semifinals.

Aziz Damani players celebrate

Despite having terrible time in the group stages, Damani also made the quarterfinals and will face rivals Tornado Bee for a place in the semifinals.

Damani dropped points for the first time this season when they failed to raise a team in their first game in Budo and also lost to Ceylon Lions but did enough picking up wins that ensured that they qualify for the quarterfinals.

Challengers

Defending champions Challengers also made the quarterfinals despite failing to raise a squad for their morning game against Premier. Hamu Kayondo put in a man of match performance against Patidar to ensure the defending champions stay in the chase for their 4th title T20 crown and third in a row.

Challengers will face Division I runners-up Kutchi Tigers a repeat of last season’s final, a game that will be a real taste for the defending champions.

Dinesh Nakrani has carried Kutchi Tigers but he doesn’t like the nasty pace of David Wabwire making this an intriguing contest.

KICC are the other unbeaten team in the T20  League and the Hanumant Katkar led side will be looking to winning their maiden local title.

KICC started the T20 campaign with a bang scoring a team record total in Jinja and have scored the most runs in the tournament thus far.

They managed to reach the quarters missing their star duo of Frank Nsubuga and Irfan Afridi who were with the Cricket Cranes in Oman and with the two now available for selection they are also favorites for at least a semifinal place.

KICC will  face the youthful Strikers in the first quarterfinal at Lugogo in a game that will be very tricky for them.
