Uganda 13-8 Kenya (Agg: 30-26)
Kenya Rugby national team had the best and last laugh at the Kampala Kyadondo Rugby grounds on Saturday as they registered a majestic display when the two perennial nations battled in the return leg of the 2013 Edition of the Elgon Cup.
The host nation started off in brilliant fashion with a well converted Bishop Onen penalty as early as the 3rd minute. However the trend of the game changed to the visitors’ favor as they equalised with a penalty of their own before taking the lead minutes later with another Ken Andola penalty following a Timothy Ddumba foul that led to the latter being sin-binned.
Marvin odongo scored a spectacular try, well converted by Jasper Onen to put Uganda again in the lead, much to the applause of the cheering crowd.
Minutes to half time Kenya restored their lead through an Isaac Adimo try well converted by Stratamore player, Ken Andolo to give Kenya a 10-16 half time lead.
“We played according to plan and determination’, said Kenya’s last penalty taker, Isaac Adino, shortly after the final game. While Alex Mubiru, Uganda’s skipper conceded defeat as he attributed the loss to complacency. ” The boys were a bit relaxed and only woke up late-late in the game,” he said.
Meanwhile, the lady Cranes defeated their Kenyan counterparts, 13-8 to register a convincing 30-26 aggregate victory and book a berth to play South Africa in the women’s world cup qualifier tie.
Charlotte Mudoola and Aisha Nakityo were inspirational in Uganda’s win while Dando Philladelphia and Dorren Remour played gallantly for the Kenyans.
“Uganda just utilized their chances, otherwise we were prepared technically,” lamented Kenya’s Assistant coach Kevin Wambua.
