Uganda’s IM Elijah Emojong ended the just concluded DSK Chess Championship (Grandmaster Norm Section) with a 50% final score after registering a total of 4.5 points out of a possible 9 in seventh position out of 14 star studded participants. He incredibly finished the event half a point ahead of one Grandmaster. To attain this feat, Emojong lost to the event’s eventual winner GM Alexander Ipatov (rated 2583) in the seventh round, beat a higher ranked South African IM Kobese Watu (rated 2343). In the eighth round and pulled off a spectacular draw against the event’s top ranked GM Sergei Tiviakov (rated 2654) in the ninth and last round. Emojong is likely to pick up 15.6 rating points from participating in the event. He is currently rated 2311 and is gradually aiming at increasing his rating to 2500 in order to attain the much coveted GM status.
