CECAFA Group B:
Kenya 3 – 1 South Sudan – Second Game
Kenya has won their second Group A match of the CECAFA senior challenge cup over South Sudan with a 3 -1 convincing victory at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi on Saturday.
The Hosts, who have welcomed back their head coach, Adel Amrouche led the game 2-1 at the half time mark. The Belgian born coach was remarkably missing on the bench during Kenya’s goal-less draw against the Ethiopian Walya Antelopes on Wednesday.
Jockins Atudo’s penalty after just 16 minutes and Jacob Keli’s headed effort are the goals that put the Harambe Stars in the lead. South Sudan’s captain, Richard Jistin had scored a beautiful freekick on the 27th minute mark to equalize the game before Kenya taking the lead once again on a day where Allan Wanga would have extended his efforts had he not being wasteful infront of Juma Jinaro’s goal posts.
David Owino, who had last scored for Kenya against Namibia in a world cup qualifier match had the last nail in South Sudan’s coffin with a 78th minute brilliant solo effort.
The result means that South Sudan officially becomes the first team to be eliminated from the 2013 CECAFA championships after getting their second loss (they lost the opener to 0-1 to Zanzibar on Wednesday). Kenya is now joint top on 4 points with Ethiopia, who beat Zanzibar in the opening fixture.
South Sudan coach, Balanga Banua praised the level of his team’s steady improvement having performed beyond his expectations unlike the previous edition in Kampala where they scored only one goal.
Zanzibar official, Waziri Sheha handled the game in which he awarded the hosts a penalty missed by Jockins Atudo after Jacob Keli had been brought down in the forbidden area by goal keeper, Juma Jinaro. Waziri however will be answerable after failing to atleast caution the goalie for that mistake.
Kenya’s assistant coach, James Nandwa who looked excited in the post match press conference was glad by the performance of his troops but he castigated the day’s center referee who failed to caution later on send off Thomas Atar who had brought down striker, Jacob Keli after 70 minutes.
“Surely, that defender would have been sent off”, Nandwa remarked. First goal scorer, Jockins Atudo missed the resultant penalty after goalie, Juma Jinaro parried off the seemingly weak effort.
