Uganda Cranes may do without defender Godfrey Walusimbi and striker Emmanuel Okwi in the upcoming CHAN finals in South Africa after reports that the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) said they are ineligible to play as they are still contracted to foreign clubs.
The continent’s soccer governing body was responding to FUFA’s earlier request to clarify on their availability issue. Okwi and Walusimbi currently at SC Villa left their foreign clubs in mysterious circumstances claiming breach of contract but CAF and FIFA later granted them permission to feature for local clubs.
Okwi left Tunisian side Etoile Du Sahel claiming the club failed to pay his full sign on fees while Walusimbi never returned to DR Congo’s CS Don Bosco after featuring for Cranes against Liberia in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers citing poor treatment at the club.
Though CAF allowed them to play for SC Villa, reports suggest the two are still contracted at their foreign clubs and are only at SC Villa on loan. Kawowo Sports effort to get clarity on the matter from the FUFA Chief Executive Officer Edgar Watson was futile but we shall keep you posted on the development.
Uganda is in pool B alongside Morocco, Burkina Faso and Zimbabwe.
