Uganda on Wednesday earned promotion to the WCL Division II which will be played in Namibia from 17-24 January 2015 after beating Bermuda at the Bayeumas Oval in Kuala Lumpur.

Needing a win to confirm their top two place at the event, Uganda were asked to field first after losing the toss and went on to restrict an out of sorts Bermuda to 140 all out in 39.5overs.

A spin attack of Davis Karashani — the only player to claim five wickets in one innings to date in the tournament, conceded 3 for 42, Henry Ssenyondo (3-40) and skipper Frank Nsubuga (3-26) took three wickets each to tie Bermuda down to 140 in 39.5 overs.

Only Kamau Leverock was able to score more than 20, making a 25-ball 27 while Onias Bascome, Jordan DeSilva and captain Malachi Jones all scored 18 with the rest of the team falling cheaply.

Roger Mukasa gave Uganda a flying start with a 68-ball 86 that had nine fours and two sixes ensuring he remained Uganda’s leading run-scorer at the tournament and also picked the Man of the match accolade . Aided by Arthur Kyobe (18), the two put on a 75-run partnership in less than 13 overs to help Uganda chase down the target of 141 for the loss of three wickets in 24.5 overs.

“We are so happy with the win today, and to qualify to WCL Div II. We’re looking forward to it, but we will need to go back and work hard. We need to play a lot of cricket before we go to Namibia, “said a delighted Nsubuga.

“Today was much better than our last match, our batters performed really well. I think we will have a good final tomorrow [Thursday]. Whichever team will play the better cricket tomorrow will win the tournament.”

Dion Stovell was the pick of the Bermuda bowlers finishing 2 for 30 in his 6.5 overs including picking danger man Mukasa and Kyobe but it was too little too late as the result sealed Bermuda’s fate, who were sent down to Division Four after losing four of their five games.

Elsewhere in rain marred matches, Nepal also secured their promotion into Division II after beating Malaysia by 36 runs (D/L method) while USA were relegated to Division Four, after a middle-order collapse handed Singapore a 32-run D/L win.

The tournament wraps up Thursday with play-off matches were Uganda will play Nepal in the final, Malaysia will take on Singapore in the third place play-off, whilst USA and Bermuda will play each other for fifth place.
