Playing at the World Badminton Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia as the only African in the men’s singles, Edwin Ekiring started on a good note on Monday morning.

In straight sets (21-18, 21-17), Ekiring the world’s 137th player defeated Ukrainian Dmytro Zavadsky who stands at 64th in the world rankings.

Ekiring told Kawowo Sports winning in straight sets wasn’t an accident.

It wasn’t an accident, I have prepared well for these world championships, and for me to win my first game in straight sets shows how much have worked to be here

Ekiring has equaled his 2013 performance in Guangzhou, China where he defeated Jarolim Vicen 2-0 (21-17, 21-13) before falling to Hong Kong’s Hu Yun in similar fashion (21-11, 21-18) in the second round.

At the same stage on Wednesday, Ekiring will take on, the Indian who is ranked 12th in the world defeated Brazilian Alex Yuwan Tjong 2-0 (21-12, 21-17).
