Geoffrey Massa equals David Obua’s Goals Record in AFCON/WC Qualifiers

Uganda Cranes striker Geoffrey Massa wrote his name into the history books after his brace against Guinea equaled icon David Obua’s all-time goal scoring record in the Africa Nations Cup/World Cup qualifiers record.

When the moment came, Massa was ready to grab the headlines and he did.

The Pretoria University striker came into the game two goals shy of legendary David Obua in Cranes’ qualification campaigns and achieved the feat in just 45 minutes.

Both goals were typical Massa – The first a good chest control before unleashing a shot past Yattara in Guinea’s goal and the second; a beauty – Luwagga slides through a brilliant pass, one-touch control from The Cranes number 11 and in a split second shoots into roof of the net to send the crowd at Namboole into frenzy.

The brace; Massa’s third on The Cranes saw him get level with Obua on eleven (11) goals. His other braces came against Benin and Lesotho in the 2010 and 2008 World Cup and AFCON qualifiers respectively.

Surprisingly, Massa has never hit a hat trick for Uganda yet most of his goals have come early during matches.

About Massa’s goals:

Massa’s first two goals in the qualification campaigns came on September 6, 2006 against Lesotho but it took him two years to net again.

Incidentally, it was also a brace against Benin on October 12, 2008 but he failed to hit the back of the net until June 11, 2011 when he scored against Guinea Bissau in the 2012 Africa Nations Cup qualifiers.

A year elapsed without him netting but the striker seemed to have finally gotten the consistency required of a top striker and has managed six goals in his previous 10 appearances.

Nevertheless, Massa has never scored a goal away from home in the qualification as all his goals have come at Namboole while Obua managed two goals away from home in games against Guinea Bissau and Mauritius.

Meanwhile, available records show that Massa has now scored 18 goals in over 35 caps for Uganda Cranes putting him level with Emmanuel Okwi.

However, 13 of Okwi’s goals came in the CECAFA Challenge Cup, 2 in friendlies and only three (3) in AFCON and World Cup qualifiers combined all in 35 caps.

Geoffrey Sserunkuma scored 16 goals for Uganda in 22 caps with six coming in CECAFA, 3 in AFCON qualifiers and the rest in friendlies.

David Obua boosts 16 goals in over 30 appearances for the national team with three in CECAFA and one in friendlies.
