Ivan Bukenya’s Kaizer Chiefs set new record in South African League

Kaizer Chiefs defeated Ajax Cape Town 1-0 yesterday to set a new South African Premier League (PSL) record of 15 successive wins.

The former Proline defender Ivan Bukenya was a second half substitute of the game that saw the two teams end the first half with no goal in a packed Cape Town Stadium.

The second half was a more exciting affair after Chiefs took the lead four minutes after the restart through defender Tefu Mashamaite.

The centre-back got up to head home Siphiwe Tshabalala’s in-swinging free-kick from the right as goalkeeper Anssi Jaakkola could only get fingertips to the ball. The only goal that Kaizer needed to earn their 8th straight league.

The victory meant that they have now broken Mamelodi Sundowns’ record of 14 consecutive domestic wins achieved in 2007 as they have won 15 matches in a row including the two wins at the end of last season. Chiefs also moved 10 points clear of the four chasing teams at the top of the Absa Premiership table.

Elsewhere Boban Zirintusa’s Polokwane City suffered a 5-1 loss against Bloemfontein Celtic. The win moves Siwelele up to 11th place on the league standings while Polokwane remains 15th.

The PSL continues tomorrow with other games to be played at different venues.
