Ghana’s Jeffrey Schlupp doubtful for Afcon 2019 finals

Ghana could do without utility player Jeffrey Schlupp for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations finals due to an injury suffered on club duty.

The Crystal Palace midfielder confirmed his season is over after injuring an ankle in the Premiership match against Manchester City last weekend.

Schlupp announced the unpleasant news on Twitter and later his manager Roy Hodgson confirmed it was season over for the Ghanaian.

“Unfortunately my season has come to an end a few weeks early due to an injury. Time to work hard and come back stronger ready for pre-season.

The Afcon kicks off in Egypt on June 21 with Ghana playing their first game in Ismailia four days later against Benin.

“He won’t play again this season, the ankle injury is such that it will take the three or so weeks we have left (to heal),” Hodgson told the media on Friday.

Schlupp has made 15 appearances for the Ghana Black Stars and was expected to be among the key players for the side.
