The 2013 Kampala Open Pool Championships will go in history as one of the most shocking in Pool History over in the years in Uganda.
One thing for real, the huge turn up of pool players in this particular tourney has been phenomenal, then on the pool tables, action has been shocking and intriguing as well.
“We expected our usual numbers of 120, but recording over 280 has been massive.”, says Michael Mawanda the PAU Publicity guru. Uganda Parliament legislator, Odonga Otto participated but got ejected in the opening round.
The one day pool action has been thus stretched to two days to grant ample time for all the registered players to take part.
Action on the opening day one saw majority of the top pool dogs in the country eliminated in the first or second rounds. The country’s top seed, Alfred Gumikiriza was bundled out by Musa Bbali while two time Kampala open winner (2011 and 2012), Sula Matovu never escaped Fred Namanya’s jaws.
2013 Easter Cup winner, Fahad Ssewankambo was another round one victim, Joseph Mutawe, the 2013 first runners’ up at the Nile Special Open Championships to winner Jona “Joker” Turigye, Wasswa Kayiiya (lost 3-1 to Charles Ssegawa), Adam Ssebi (lost to the deaf, Ivan Kanyesigye), and Jeff Miiro, among others
In the ladies category, defending champion, and the reigning Pool Queen, Carol Kanzira, was eliminated in round one and so was the Easter champion (2013), Vivian Kagoye.
“This is healthy for a growing sport. It shows the level of competitiveness in Pool development in the country, organizing secretary, Robert Kayanja tells Kawowo Sports.
Action resumes at Capital Pub on Sunday for the closing rounds and awards presentation.Pool Association of Uganda has exclusively organized the event with assistance from Capital Pub management.
